Our Hoophouses #6: Woodchip Walkways

Our Hoophouse has been a great garden space. Now, that it is staying, it is time to take care of the walkways.

The Hoophouse Journey Recap

This past spring, we bought a Hoophouse, through Amazon, as an experiment. The primary goal was to keep the critters away from my plants.

We had a successful year. No critters and lots of produce.

The walkways were just covered with cardboard, in an effort to keep the weeds from growing. That also worked but, now that the Hoophouse is a key element of my gardens, it is time to think longterm and that means “woodchips”.

Woodchip Source

I ordered some woodchips from Timber-Pro, our local tree service and the load of wood arrived yesterday. All I had to do was to get the chips from the pile outside to the walkways inside.

The easiest way to do that was by using buckets. Fill them; carry them; dump them; repeat. (I should backtrack a bit and say that I also added another layer of cardboard before putting down the layer of chips.)

Next Step

I barely made a dent in the pile of woodchips but I still have a lot of garden area to cover - outside the greenhouse. I will be filling in all the walkways around the trellises with the woodchips.

The trellis area has to wait, though, because, at the moment, I’m all out of cardboard.

It’s a work in progress, just like the gardens.
