Food in Jars”  by Marisa McClellan- the perfect book at the perfect time.

This is the fourth time that Homesteadian.com has offered a free book giveaway and, for me, this book couldn’t have come at a better time.

Why Preserve Food?

Just this morning I got the invoice for my heating fuel for this month and, oh my goodness, the cost of living is really getting out of control.

My thoughts instantly went to how I can grow and preserve more of my own foods this year, reducing our grocery bill and leaving more in the budget for heating our home in the winter.

Then, I remembered the book draw and I got out my personal copy of this canning book.

Which of the foods in the recipes do I or can I grow in my gardens?
There are recipes for:
  • Apples
  • Apricots
  • Asparagus
  • Beans
  • Beets
  • Cauliflower
  • Cucumbers
  • Cherries
  • Garlic
  • Grapes
  • Onions
  • Pears
  • Peppers
  • Plums
  • Rhubarb
  • Strawberries
  • Tomatoes
  • Zucchini
Yes!! I grow all of these in my garden. I will be able to preserve a lot of things in a lot of different ways!

Note: (There are more recipes for more fruits and veggies but this list is what I personally, already, grow.)

AND… I have some cherries buried at the bottom of my freezer. Perhaps it is time to dig them out and make some cherry jam (one of the many cherry recipes in the book.)

What about you? Do you preserve “food in jars”? Is there something in your garden that you would like to learn how to preserve?
