a simpler life

This past spring I tried growing garlic for the first time and it was a failure.
I had sprouted some garlic indoors and then planted it in the garden.
I got nothing.

Fast forward to today (October 31) and I see a row of garlic has spring up. Well, that is exciting. Or is it?

I realized that I know nothing about what to expect for garlic-growing.
I had planted more garlic this fall and it, too, has sprouted and is growing beautifully.

Fall growth: Is this normal?
Should it have stayed dormant until the spring?

Thanks in advance for your help, fellow homesteaders.

I planted garlic a few years ago. Do I know what I’m doing? That’s a big NO but it comes back every year and tastes amazing.
It comes up in the spring then seems to disappear by August no matter how much I water and tend to it, then comes back up in September.

I just read this great blog about growing garlic:
  • A garlic bulb in the ground has a better chance to grow than one in a bag or in the garbage (just plant it)
  • As long as you can dig into the soil (not frozen solid) you can plant fall garlic
  • Garlic takes about 5-6 months to reach maturity
  • Garlic ready to harvest when leaves start turning brown (and not just because there is a drought)
  • Harvest BEFORE 2/3 of leaves are brown so that they store well
